Some people fail, some people succeed, and some people never really try at all. So why is it exactly that some people have so much success while others don’t?
I’m a firm believer that you can learn a lot about success by watching others who’ve already been there and achieved it. It’s probably the same reason why I like posting inspirational quotes about success and life from celebrities, politicians, entrepreneurs, and other important public figures.
Although there are lots of things that go into becoming a success, here are 7 reasons I’ve identified why people succeed.
They have the desire.
In the Eric Thomas motivational video I’ve posted before, Thomas shares the story of the kid starting out and the guru. The guru in the story tells the kid, “When you want success as bad as you want to breathe, then you’ll be successful.”
The thing is, too many people simply wish they were successful. It’s only when you’re willing to do everything that is necessary to succeed that you’ll find success. Knocking out that extra set at the gym even when you’re exhausted, staying up working your business plan while your competitors sleep… when you continually do things others won’t, you’ll be able to do the things others can’t.
The have a plan.
It’s not enough to just have an idea and desire, you have to have a plan to carry it out. The only thing certain about every day, is that the time will pass. Successful people don’t just let the day pass, they put in work and make sure they’ve moved forward towards their goal. They will have a plan and an outline for what needs to get done and when, then prioritize the big things first.
The have a winning attitude.
If you don’t believe in yourself, who will? People who are successful know what they want, and know within that they are capable of achieving their dreams. Like Henry Ford said, “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t, you’re right.”
They show enthusiasm.
Nobody ever got to the pinnacle by hating what they were doing. Successful people not only love what they do, they show the world that they love what they do through their actions. Enthusiasm is contagious and can helps to create a winning culture.
They are always learning.
I came across a picture of a Bentley recently that had the license plate, “2.0GPA.” What I took away from that picture, is that there are many ways to learn and formal education is only a small part.
Successful people don’t just stop learning because they’ve graduated. They attend meetings, they read, they talk and network with others in their field or fields they’re interested in, and are always in the pursuit of knowledge.
They are efficient.
When I say successful people are efficient, what I mean is, successful people work hard AND smart. There are plenty of people who work hard who aren’t successful. There are also plenty of people in the world who know what to do and how to do it, but don’t put in the work. It’s only by working hard and smart that you’ll achieve your goals and climb to the top of your field.
They give themselves time.
I put out a tweet a while back that stated, “Overnight success is never overnight.”
People viewing from the outside only see success as it’s hitting the tipping point of actually happening or is already occurring. They don’t often see all the work that goes into something behind the scenes that has led up to that point.
It takes years to become a doctor, lawyer, professional athlete, successful business owner, inventor, or you name it. Too often people will try something, not see immediate success, and ditch the idea and adopt their old ways. The reason people fail when dieting is the same reason people fail to have success in other areas. Successful people invest in themselves and realize that doing big things takes time.
